Mars Ravelo’s DYESEBEL on GMA 7: My Cut
My friends may be surprised upon reading this post. I admit it. I am not a Kapuso, GMA 7 nor Marian Rivera fan. During high school, I was even a member of Kapamilya, ABS-CBN 2 defender when our section has debates about who’s the copycat or not. Anyways, we (I, Jeric and Roxanne) are all at the same room when they tuned in to GMA 7 because it was DYESEBEL (a Philippine version of Little Mermaid).
I watched with them, that was the first time I have ever watched the show since it first aired last April 28, 2008. I will not comment on the story line perse because I have watched DYESEBEL the movie starring Charlene Gonzales. What struck me most are the creativity and the improvement in the props, costumes and sets— production design. I must admit, it really outweighed ABS-CBN’s Marina (not questioning the acting of Ms. Claudine Baretto). Compared to the quality of the video (I don’t know how is it called) in the previous television series of GMA 7, Dyesebel’s was way different. The colors are bright and it is very conducive in the eyes. They also have fantastic visual effects.
I am a fan of the art and so I really appreciated on how they tediously designed each wonderful costumes and sets they use. The tail of Dyesebel played by Marian Rivera looked like a real one and it looks natural. Though Fredo, played by Dingdong Dantes was similar to the acting of Gian Carlo (Palos, ABS-CBN 2) played by Jake Cuenca in terms of their arrogant, challenging-someone-look or what others referred as the “Angas” look in Filipino.
I wasn’t able to watch the whole episode so I can’t critic that much. I wasn’t able to see other characters and how they play their role but having seen it for the first time— a none Kapuso, GMA 7 fan point of view satisfied me well enough.
I can’t say that I will continue to watch Dyesebel but I give a Thumbs up to Bb. Joyce Bernal, Director of Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel and to the whole production team. I heard that it hit a high TV rating. For more information regarding the TV series please follow the link.
