Because I Said So: Reaction on Communication

Having the chance to observe a woman delivering her first-born or her second, third and more, I understand why mothers feel that they own their sons and daughters in their entire life. After I have finished watching the movie, Because I Said So I really, much appreciated the kind of relationship I have with my own mother.

While I was watching the film, I observed that Milly (played by Mandy Moore) and Daphne Wilder her mom (played by Diane Keaton) has very close ties but a way out of hand communication patterns. In the story, Milly has unstable and not-so-ideal intimate relationships with men, which made her mother, Daphne to find a perfect man for her, secretly. From the start up to the middle of the story, they were shouting with each other when they converse. As I look at it, Milly has very sensitive feelings, which enables her to react violently whenever Daphne tries to say something. Another thing is, Daphne, keeps on insisting— nudging what she wants and keeps on deciding for Milly whom was old enough to decide for herself. They both don’t know how to calm down, be quiet and listen to each other thinking that they have better point of view than the other. I realized that a good relationship would turn out to be a disastrous one when it doesn’t have a “healthy” communication— when no one tries to listen.

They say that “Mothers are always right…” and I definitely agree to it. Mothers have this ESP and super great instincts and intuitions when it comes to decision-making or simply everything and when you follow it; you’ll definitely be on the right tract. They can foresee the upcoming situations and that is one of the many things I admire about mothers. In the story, Daphne nags and Milly objects but follows afterwards. Daphne always push things that she wants and knows what is best for Milly thinking that she is still a baby. From the simplest things like choosing Milly’s clothes to the most complex things like finding the “right one”, she always insists her decision. Milly loves her mother so much that she just follows the wishes of her mother and forgetting what she really wants. It is a mother’s prerogative to be followed but less do they know that pushing things they want to their children makes their children not the person they truly are. They tend to forget their own self for the sake of complying with the things that will make their parents happy. Now, that is the sad part of it. Mothers or parents may I say, should learn to let go of their most precious children and let them spread their wings when it is time because they don’t own them and their children has their own life to discover by themselves.

Upon reaching the end of the story, wherein the mother got laryngitis, she becomes quiet, I actually thought that she will finally learn to face her issues and let go but she didn’t. The incident wherein Milly finally knew about the “internet thing” and starts ignoring her mother for days, I think that was effective because there came the resolution to the story. Then I realized, distance and time indeed, makes you realize things, it makes you hear yourself and the other side of the story. Listening plays an important role for an effective communication and not just listening but listening carefully and attentively. It leads to a healthier relationship as how the movie ended. I am lucky that my mom and I have good relationship with good communication a d that we don’t have to go through with that kind stressful situations in which I can’t bear even the thought of it.

This is my assignment for my speech class. This is a one-page reaction paper and I got 95, I should have not erased the other parts because from what I learned, my classmates who have 2 pages got a higher score. It is much preferred by our professor to submit a one-page reaction paper and that is why I did. Nevertheless, it is still a flat one. LOL!
